I think learning the role that string guage plays in that can be helpful. Maybe someone likes the way the various registers of a particular player's guitar vary tonally and the way they hit the amp causing low notes to stay clean while the top end is grittier. There is nothing wrong with emulation whether it involves timbres/tone or harmonic concepts, melodic ideas, rhythm, etc. Maybe, as pointed out above, something about a particular player's style really resonates with them.
